Fantasy Novels That Will Take Your Breath Away
5 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novels That Will Take Your Breath Away Martin Cahill is a writer working in Manhattan and living in Astoria, Queens. He is a graduate of the 2014 Clarion Writersâ Workshop and a member of the New York City based writing group, Altered Fluid. He has had fiction published in Fireside Fiction, Nightmare Magazine, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and Shimmer Magazine. Martin also writes non-fiction reviews, articles, and essays for Tor.com, the Barnes Noble Sci-fi and Fantasy Blog, and Strange Horizons. Twitter Handle: @McflyCahill90 Some books just take your breath away. Whether itâs a series that builds and builds over the course of books until the final volume leaves you gasping for air, a brilliant take on a tried and true genre or narrative, or a tiny slice of fiction that pierces your heart like a needle, leaving no mark on the skin but injecting you with emotion all the same, some books leave you panting, adrenaline pumping, and craving more. In the world of science fiction and fantasy, weâve especially begun to see a revolution in the way these stories are told. Below, find some sci-fi/fantasy novels and series that have make me shake my head in admiration and pride. The Broken Earth Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin Every book Jemisin has written strikes with a thunderous boom, a split of lightning through the sky, leaving the air itself feeling charged, electric. Her latest series, The Broken Earth, is no exception. A series that examines rage, social injustice, cultures of use and abuse, power dynamics, what an apocalypse would really look like, and a struggle for both freedom of self and freedom of identity, Jemisinâs three book epic delivers, as a mother from an oppressed community in society must find her daughter in a world that is ending faster than either of them anticipate. Jemisin succeeds in creating a narrative that is brutal, harrowing, and filled with moments large and small that made me gasp from page one. The Craft Series by Max Gladstone I always love when writers push fantasy out of their regular milieu. Much like the way Jemisin tinkers with conventionâ"setting a fantasy novel in a precarious, apocalyptic world with a middle-aged mother protagonistâ"Gladstone is equally as happy to superimpose our 21st century ideas, cultures, and fears onto a world of monsters, myths, and magicians. Necromantic lawyers? Call us at your convenience! Got demons in the water supply? Hang on, weâll send someone out there. Is your temple disintegrating because no one can agree upon its shared reality? Well, letâs get the board together and talk about it. Gladstone gleefully orchestrates the world of the Craft, picking and choosing where to interrogate finance as faith, investment as idolatry, or law as magic. Whether heâs discussing gentrification in Last First Snow, or space travel in Ruin of Angels, Gladstone backs down from nothing, and through his Craft Series, tells us a truth we can only see through a certain angle. The Changeling by Victor LaValle New York City is alive in a way only a certain handful of writers can capture, and Victor LaValle is absolutely one of them. Through his words, he brings to light the magic inherent in the streets of the city; the way that skyscrapers become icons of faith, the way Central Park can be just as haunted and ethereal and lovely as any faerie wood, how the subway thrums through the veins of the boroughs like blood vessels of grating sound and harsh light. In The Changeling, LaValle twines together myth and Manhattan, sacrifice and subways, as a man journeys into the world beneath this world to find out the truth of his wife and child, both of whom he believes heâs lost. LaValle captures these two worlds and braids them together effortlessly, and by the end of the novel, as he pulls away from the story to let you look at how he did it, even now, I canât see; I only know it was magic, and this man is well-versed in the spells of narrative, mystery, horror, and myth. The Only Great Harmless Thing by Brooke Bolander Bolander is well known for her searing, lyrical, bittersweet short stories that are less a meander through a meadow and more a rocket burning fuel, desperate to escape orbit and bring you along for the ride. Her prose is gorgeous and hits with the kinetic power of a heavyweight champion, and there hasnât been a story of hers that Iâve finished where I havenât put a hand to my forehead, suddenly feeling as though Iâve come down with fever. The Only Great Harmless Thing, her new novella, is no different. Set up like mirrors through time, Bolander weaves together the story of an alternate world where Topsy, an abused and mistreated elephant, meets with Regan, one of the radium girls currently facing her own death by the glow of the element they were working with, which executives did not tell them was poison. And through it all, the haunting deep-myth history of Topsy and her ilk, told to us through the triumphant trumpeting of history, as well as a far future where the sins of the past are eager to be forgiven. Except elephants never forget. All of these tales come crashing together in a crescendo that is tragic and horrible and angry, so angry, and justifiable in that anger, as together, Topsy and Regan sing a song of rage that will shake the pillars of the world. Though this is a slim tale, its impact on me was enormous. The Tensorate Series by JY Yang THESE BOOKS YâALL. Ahem. My apologies. Itâs just that these books by JY Yang are such a breath of fresh air, that itâs tough for me to talk about them without getting a littleâ¦energetic. But that energy is earned, as Yang does everything in their power to make these stories sing. Beginning with the duology The Black Tides of Heaven and The Red Threads of Fortune, and continuing with this summerâs The Descent of Monsters, we follow the twins of the Protector: brash, stubborn, and sensitive Akeha, and his sister, Mokoya, whose powers of prophecy made her distant, cautious, and strong. Their stories braid throughout the first two novellas, and continue on into the third story; no matter what the plot may be, Yang manages to keep things fresh and exciting; theyâre equally as gifted at interrogating aspects of gender, sexuality, power, imperialism, hierarchy, family, and love, as they are at crafting a fully lived in world full of intricate magic and massive monsters and deep history. The Tensorate is full of mystery but none of it would be half as interesting without Yangâs deft prose and their rich, complicated characters giving this world life. Admissions Tips for Vanderbilts MBA Program
This week we welcome Christie St. John, Director of Admissions at Vanderbilt Universityââ¬â¢s Owen Graduate School of Management. Christie earned her PhD in French and Italian from Vanderbilt and worked at Vanderbilt as Director of International Relations before becoming the Senior Associate Director of Admissions at Tuck. Christie returned to Vanderbilt as Director of MBA admission in 2012.document.createElement('audio'); https://media.blubrry.com/admissions_straight_talk/p/www.accepted.com/hubfs/IV_Christie_St-John_2017.mp3Podcast: Play in new window | Download | EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | TuneIn | Spotify Can you give an overview of the Vanderbilt 2-year MBA program with a focus on its distinctive elements? [1:54] Two things make our program distinctive. First, we are on a modular system, instead of semester, so we have seven week mods. Students get through all core courses in the first year, and they also start taking electives during their second mods. Students have three required courses and one elective in Mod 2, two and two in Mod 3, and in Mod 4, one required course and three electives. Second, we have the Leadership Development Program, which is distinctive in that we use executive coaches who have worked with mid-level managers from Fortune 500 companies and we pair up the students with coaches in the fields they are planning to go into. For example, if you are interested in going into finance, you would be paired with someone who had worked with businesses on Wall Street. The coaching is included in the program, and strictly optional, but 80+ percent of students participate. Students also work on their own leadership development plan for the entire two years and also as alums. We have staff devoted to leadership development for each of our degree programs. Vanderbilt also has several one-year programs including a Master of Management in Health Care, Master of Accounting, Master of Finance, and a Master of Marketing. Can you touch on these programs and how they differ from the MBA? [5:00] The main difference is that those programs are for people just graduating from undergrad without much experience. The Master of Finance is quite competitive and they do look for internships and quant proficiency ââ¬â the GMAT is required. The Master of Marketing is new as of last year and growing fast, and the Master of Accounting is also quite new. Each degree program has their own dedicated admissions person, faculty member and career service person, and for the last five years we have had 100% placement with the Master of Finance. The Master of Accounting also has 100% placement as we work with the Big Four accounting firms on projects and early placement. The Master of Marketing is so new we donââ¬â¢t have stats yet. Each program is one year long. Graduates of these programs can get experience and then come back to Vanderbilt and get their MBA in three semesters with a guaranteed scholarship. One exception is the Master of Management in Health Care, which was launched several years ago for people in the industry with 8-10 years of experience. Whatââ¬â¢s new at Vanderbilt? [8:07] We have the Turner Family Center for Social Enterprise, which resulted from the Turner family having given us a large grant to pull all of our coursework and programs that relate to the non-profit industry under one umbrella. The person directing that is a graduate who started a minority business lending institution when graduating and finds projects all over the local area as well as internationally. Our students work with these organizations to find a business solution to a social problem. If students are interested in going into this area when they graduate, the director of the program, Mario Avila, will help them with their job search. Project Pyramid is the international projects that we do. This is an interdisciplinary trans-university initiative, which means not just a business school project. We draw in grad students from nursing, engineering, law school, anthropology, etc. Students run projects with the help of Mario and faculty members, then go to the country at spring break for 10 days or more. They get two hour course credits for this, and have done projects in Africa, Nepal, Chile, Peru, etc., and they learn so much. The Vanderbilt employment report for the Class of 2016 shows that 25% of the graduate went into consulting and a whopping 24% went into health care. That is a very high percentage. To what do you attribute that success? [12:17] We say Nashville is the center of the healthcare industry. There are over 350 companies that employ over 335,000 people just here in Nashville. One of the larger organizations, the HCA Hospital Corporation of America, owns 165 hospitals and 115 small surgery centers in over 20 states and England, so people donââ¬â¢t just work here in Nashville but all over. Fresenius Medical Care, based here but with over 3,000 dialysis center locations around the world, is also a big employer. We have really close relationships with a lot of the healthcare organizations here. Any advice for Vanderbiltââ¬â¢s essay? [14:54] We donââ¬â¢t want people coming in saying they have no idea what they want to do and theyââ¬â¢ll figure it out when they are here. Yes, the MBA program is a transformative experience and they in fact will figure it out when they are here, however they donââ¬â¢t have a lot of time, so the main things we are trying to get out of that essay are, Do you know what you are good at? What industries and functional areas you are interested in? We never hold anyone to what they say in the admissions essay ââ¬â you only know what you know at the time you apply. Once you get here and listen to the companies that visit you learn a lot more and can figure out what you really want, and then we help with that. The Career Management Office starts working with our students in April and all through the summer we provide podcasts and work with students on resumes so they are prepared for interviews, for the really early recruiting processes like the National Black MBA, Forte Leadership Conference, and MBA Veterans Conference that start in October. Most companies will be recruiting for first year internships in January, but for these early opportunities, students need to have thought about what they want. We also use that essay for acceptance. If we see somebody who is just throwing something out there, like, ââ¬Å"I want to go into PE,â⬠but have no quant background, no finance background, and no appreciable network, that person really doesnââ¬â¢t know what that is, and needs to go out and do some soul searching and have a reality check. Sometimes folks in our office even call our applicants to ask why they are interested in what they are. We really donââ¬â¢t want students to be floundering. What about the video essay? [19:08] We started doing that last year. I know a lot of schools are doing them with case questions or ââ¬Å"tell me what you want to doâ⬠questions. We decided to have a little bit of fun with it. The questions are not difficult, they rotate with each application round. They are random when you go online. If you donââ¬â¢t like the first question that comes up you can choose a second. If you donââ¬â¢t like that one you get one more chance and must answer that third question. You get about 90 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to record. We just want to know what you can talk about extemporaneously. This helps us discern interpersonal skills, vocabulary, how articulate you are, see what you look like, and can be used by the admissions team to further an individualââ¬â¢s case for admission (ââ¬Å"I think this person is great ââ¬â look at the video. See what I mean?â⬠). Can you give us an example of some questions? [21:04] Tell me whatââ¬â¢s great about your hometown? If you invite me over for dinner what will you make? What distinguishes applicants who get interview invitations from those who dont other than stats? [21:54] We are looking for what you think you want to do, what qualities you possess already, and why you think our MBA will get you there. We are looking for transferable skills. What can those invited to interview expect on interview day? [22:59] If they are coming to visit us they will have a student host that will first take them to class and then drop them back off in admissions, though sometimes the interview comes first depending on the class schedule of the day. The interview is more of a conversation. We donââ¬â¢t do case interviews, or ask about the stock exchange. We really want to know about you. Why you want an MBA, what you think you will get out of our program, what you are going to be involved in. We want people who will come and enrich our community and leave behind a legacy. There are so many ways to be involved here. We are a small program, so we do place a lot of value on interpersonal skills and a personââ¬â¢s collaborative nature. We are not a school for divas, and people can see that right away. We are small enough that we get to know our students, but big enough to attract a lot of great companies. I understand that Nashville is a lovely city with great quality of life, but itââ¬â¢s not a business center like NYC, Chicago, or LA or a start-up hotbed like Silicon Valley or Boston. How would you respond to potential applicant concerns about Vanderbiltââ¬â¢s location? [26:07] Nashville is the ââ¬Å"itâ⬠city now. The Tennessee Economic Council has done so much outreach. In the state of Tennessee there are 51 public universities, 36 private universities and 27 different tech centers. We have a highly educated population. 82 people are moving here a day because of the job situation, and Forbes or a similar publication last year ranked Nashville as the #1 choice for recent graduates. Tennessee was just ranked #1 for foreign direct investment in IBMââ¬â¢s Global Location Trends Report. Bridgestone America, Hankook Tire, Nissan, Beretta, CKE Restaurant, ATC Automation, Volkswagen, all the healthcare organizations, UBS, ATT, you name it, are all here. The economy is good here, and as far as being an entrepreneurial center, it is booming. What Silicon Valley and other places cannot offer we can, with an affordable cost of living and lack of congestion. We are two hours by plane from most major cities, with the international airport close by. Whatââ¬â¢s an example of something entrepreneurial and really cool that a Vanderbilt student or alum is doing? [30:59] One of our current students is working on a housing exchange platform. Itââ¬â¢s an app that will allow students to swap apartments during internships and so on. The young man who pitched that idea just won a Firestarter Scholarship and is up for a Soar grant (we offer four $25K grants a year). There is a lot of help here if you have a good idea. What are some work opportunities available for students while in school? [32:28] We really believe in the practical application of what you are learning in business school, so whatever specialty you are going into there are possibilities for small consulting projects during the year. A lot of those are through the health care immersion program, the Turner Family Center with non-profits, some are with start-ups. Some students start working up to 20 hours a week and they learn so much. What advice would you give to someone thinking ahead to a Fall 2018 application? [34:05] Reach out to our students. Go to our website, and do a search for MBA Ambassadors. Bios are there, emails are there. Students are really good about responding. Christie, thank you so much for joining me today. Where can listeners and potential applicants learn more about Vanderbiltââ¬â¢s MBA programs? [37:40] Our website isà business.vanderbilt.edu, or they can write to our MBA office at MBA@owen.vanderbilt.edu. We are happy to talk with you, and hope you can visit. Sonnys Blues and the Weary Blues Free Essay Example, 1250 words
One can see that the problem of identity crisis faced by immigrant communities in a host nation is similar to this problem. For instance, the problem of identity crisis faced by the narrator, Sonny, and the musician are same. But they made use of different ways to cope up with the situation. B. The effect of music in human life Music deeply influences human life because the same is with entertainment value. In the first half of the Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues, the narrator does not consider that music is important in human life. Instead, he considers that social acceptability and personal relationship is important. But he tries his level best to make his brother acceptable within his private circle. Later, he came to realize that he cannot influence his brother. Suzy Bernstein Goldman stated that ââ¬Å"Sonnys music stirs special memories in the brothers lives, but these blues belong to all of us, for they symbolize the darkness which surrounds all those who fail to listen to and remain unheard by their fellow menâ⬠(233). We will write a custom essay sample on Sonny's Blues and the Weary Blues or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/pageorder now Within this context, the narrator hates Sonnyââ¬â¢s interest in music. He considers that music and drug addiction are interconnected. In the end, the narrator came to realize that music is the most effective factor behind the success in his brotherââ¬â¢s life. On the other side, the musician in the poem Weary Blues is aware of the soothing effect of music in human life. In the Selected Poems of Langston Hughes by Langston Hughes, the narrator pointed out that ââ¬Å"Droning a drowsy syncopated tune, rocking back and forth to a mellow croon, I heard a Negro playâ⬠(33). One can see that jazz (Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues) and blues music (Weary Blues) deeply influence the characters in these works. Both the characters (Sonny and the musician) are aware of the soothing effect of music in human life. On the other side, Sonnyââ¬â¢s elder brother is not able to realize the importance of music in human life. Still, both the works unearth the effect of music in human life. C. The usage of Music as an innovative mode of communication When an individual considers music as an innovative mode of communication, the ultimate aim of music (say, unification of human minds) beyond its entertainment value is fulfilled. For instance, Sonny is aware of the fact that he can make use of music as an innovative mode of communication. He considers that, music is the core of his personal interest. Besides, his career interest is not limited to the context of his school education. The meeting point of his personal interest and career interest is same, the scenario of jazz music.

Health Policy and Law Basics Lisa Aquinas Dry. Sherry Grover Health Policy and Law 1/24/15 The perspective that have chosen was the professional autonomy perspective. The reason I picked this one is because of the advantages and what I would look for from a physicianââ¬â¢s office. We will write a custom essay sample on Done But Need Reference or any similar topic only for you Order Now One advantage is the convenient hours the physicianââ¬â¢s office has. The hours would be Monday thru Thursday they are open to am to pm and Friday hours would be am to pm and Saturday hours would be Bam to 1 pm. A lot of patients work till moieties till pm and cannot make it to the doctors till at least 7 or pm, also a lot of patients might not be able to make it to the doctors till the weekend if they work late at night. Another advantage is that patients should be offered and allowed to make voluntary choices for life changing healthcare interventions that they will or will not receive. Some disadvantages are the type of patients they physician will see and treat. It is not right for a doctor to only treat certain types of patients when all patients should be treated the name and not different than anyone else. Another disadvantage would be the type and information that the physician will disclose to the patients. All patients should be told all information and never left in the dark about anything especially if it has to do with the patient. All patients would have to have insurance that is required by the law in order to be seen. If a patient does not have insurance they will be required to apply for medical assistance before they are seen at the hospital. If a patient does not qualify for medical assistance and cannot afford insurance they would be seen and then asked to fill out a paper to see if they qualify for charity help thru the hospital. At the hospital no can be turned away. Another key component is the HIPPO It is a law that everyone should have to follow the HIPPO law. When a patient would come in to the hospital the patient would have to sign a HIPPO form as part of the paper work. No one in the hospital is allowed to give any information about the patient to anyone unless the patient gives permission in writing. Another one would be where someone would have health insurance butte would accept the insurance. Someone who has medical assistance will be treated in the hospital because they have insurance thru the state which is run by the government. When someone who has medical assistance will be treated for what is wrong but the patient will be told what is not covered by the insurance and payment arrangements would be made. The patients that have Medicaid the government will make payments to the hospital for the services they are provided. Administration regulations and rules are made for Medicaid over 40 years became a real battleground for the program. Medicaid regulations that are passed by the federal department of health and human services and the state -level agencies are what brought the program to life. In every state there is a constitution and separate constitution. Most important constitution provisions are written in broad terms that lead to may legal controversies because there are to many competing approaches and theories so can interpret ambiguous constitution phrases. In the state of Massachusetts the Supreme Court has ruled the death penalty is prohibited under the stateââ¬â¢s constitution. And Marshlandââ¬â¢s constitution requires a jury to order to convict a person of a crime. A statute must be written results in the need for courts to interpret and apply general statues to a lot of specific legal cases, this is called statutory construction. For power of ruling congress may delegate adjudicatory and enforcement powers to the administration agencies. Because these are not located in the executive, rather than the judicial branch they must still provide the Bill of rights. How to cite Done But Need Reference, Papers
